maybe the worst. reformat and reinstall......... a bug
created by internet explorer update conflicts on some
machines. time to save all data in backup.

That's correct sally. It is a result of IE cumulative updates from the first nine months of 2003. Mostly those for IE 6. All most all a result of bad mshtml.dll files.

I am having this same problem. Every time I click on
Windows Explorer I get into this bad cycle. I spent $35
for Microsoft to tell me to build a new user profile --
but is that the problem and would that fix work???

Reformatting is NOT a path I wish to go down.

Is there any way on a Win 2000 machine to uninstall JUST
IE 6 completely and start again with just that software?
Also, I don't understand the how IE 6 and Windowws
explorer are related/connected.

Thanks
Little Ma

You would like to understand how Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer are related other then of course the trial in which Microsoft was made to eat dogmeat when they suggested removing IE was child's play? Ok try this:

In Windows Explorer select your root folder on the left in the folder pane view. In the address bar of Windows Explorer you will see C:\ Select that and type www.microsoft.com and hit <ENTER>. Hit the back button to return to C:\ That should show you that they are intimately related.

Sure there is a way to uninstall IE 6. But ONLY if you have not installed a Windows 2000 Service pack with IE 6 already installed. If IE 6 appears in Add\Remove then you are good to go. If not then a complete re-installation of the operating system will be necessary to remove IE 6.

The new user profile? Naw ain't going to change anything. But you can always try of course.

Here is something that may help:

Start | Run | regsvr32 /u thumbvw.dll | OK | OK.

If that helps let me know and I'll show you a minimal configuration for this issue. This is really more then necessary but the point is to see if it helps first before we do micro-surgery.

Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer are the same clown with different
masks. In fact, Windows itself doesn't know which is which half the time.
Here's another example: Create a shortcut to Explorer.exe using any
optional parameter whatever. For example, the Target box on the shortcut
might contain "explorer.exe /e". Now double-click the icon, and you'll
get an window with "Microsoft Internet Explorer" in the title, despite
that fact that Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) is mentioned nowhere.
