explorer.exe error application

R

ryjoswin

After logging on the system crashes. The response is:
explorer.exe - application error the instruction
at "0x77f57ec4" referenced memory at "0x00390035"
The memory could not be "written"
Click on OK to terminate the program.

I have reinstalled the Windows and set up another user
account. Now it works OK with a new user account but the
fault is still present in my old user account.
The fault has first occured when opening folder with
photos.
I am running Win XP Home edition on Compaq Presario 2100
laptop.
Any help most appreciated. Thanks

Ryjoswin, It looks like there are at least three of us
with perhaps the same trouble, see Phil Green's
post "Windows Explorer error message" a few pages back,
2/3/2004 2:54:18 PM. I have seen the same error msg. and
some additional as well as "Explorer has encountered an
error and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." Win Explorer crashes temporarily taking
my task bar, sys tray, and Start button with it for a few
seconds (or freezing them if it doesn't close out), also
my Active Desktop must be restored. At first it acted
that way after I created a new folder in 'My Pictures.'
After some opening/re-opening the new folder disappeared
but still when I change the View of 'My Pictures' from
Thumbnails to List, Explorer will crash.

I have downloaded and installed a patch from:
www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
displaylang=en&FamilyID=49E589AE-2F93-48DC-A39A-
C9D98DADA7A5

It seem to have improved things somewhat. But the system
still crashes when I try to do anything with graphic files
under my old user name. No problems though under a new
user name.

I'm getting the same kind of reaction with Windows XP and
it only does it when I'm in my pictures folder.

Runtime Error C++ Runtime Visual Library
windows/explorer.exe

May be linked to using the favorite places menu from that
window.
