Explorer eating up CPU usage

Hello, kind strangers

I have a Toshiba laptop, and I've been on the phone with its support for hours before they told me that they can't help me with MS problems. Every time I launch explorer my CPU usage shoots up to 100%, everything hangs, and I alt-ctrl-del to get the Task Manager. I see that the explorer.exe is in the high 90's. I kill and then run the explorer. Am I doomed to forever restarting explorer every time I want to find a file

Please help this pathetic newbie

Thanks!

Thank you, but it appears to be doing that even if I not open any AVI's. Although I do have some incomplete ones sitting in there. I haven't tried your solution because I my technological expertise is so low that I can't even do that, so I'll keep thinking about this

Thanks.
