Folks:
I've seen this problem reported several times, but never a solution and
maybe not all the clues.
Symptom: You double click on a file in Explorer or on the desktop. There is
about a 5-10 sec delay before the needed app (eg: Word, Notepad etc) starts
to launch (needed apps installed on local machine). Launching the app
directly brings it up almost immediately.
Clues:
1. During the wait, one can see (eg: on hub) that the computer is attempting
some network activity, for no apparent reason. See also notes below.
2. Unplug the network and the delay vanishes... double clicking files causes
immediate launch of associated app.
System Details:
WinXP Pro 2002 SP1
Mobile P3 1GHz 256 Meg RAM, 40 G HD with plenty space
Further References:
In Google, I see, for example:
"Incredibly Slow File Associations & Shortcuts" 2003-11-19 in this group
"Explorer hangs for a while" 2003-10-15, also in this group (and the author
noted the same TCP activity with TCPView, as I did with sysinternals
tdimonnt)
Sure would be nice to have an answer to this one.
