What happens if you keep Thumbnails turned off, and preview the files
one at a time ? (The Picture Tasks view, should have a Details thing in the
lower left, and clicking that, should be showing a preview of the file
you just highlighted.)

Is it one particular file causing a problem ? Or is it every file you
try in that folder ?

The problem is either going to be one individual file is bad in some
way, or it is a problem with the OS.

I tried to find a tool, which could "validate" graphics files, but
I haven't seen one yet with that specific task in mind. A validator
would be checking the file for correctness in all respects, as a
means to detect a file that could cause a problem for a tool
attempting to parse it. That isn't an easy task, because some
graphics file formats have an infinite number of variations, and
the standard is seldom completely implemented (TIFF).

thumbnail problems

HI,
I have Windows XP Media Center with all the latest updates. I have a generic
computer with 2GB RAM and a 500gb hard drive on a RAID mirror. I've had this
exact setup for about 2 yrs now. I checked just 2 days ago to see if there
were anymore updates for my version and there wasn't. I was hoping this was
caused by MS and they would offer a fix since it started happening after an
update. I also tried going back to a previous resore point but it goes
through all the motions then tells me it was unable to restore! And, oddly
enough it's only one folder - the folder with all my "fun stuff" jpgs, gifs,
ani's, icons, etc etc. It does not crash an dgive me an error when I click on
preview but I can't do that because I need to view them all and compare
between different versions of an image.

I will transcribe the screenshot and send it in a few - it's pretty wordy
and has links for the "details".

And to the person that commented on my spelling errors - get over it. It's
still readable and that was unnecessary. It was 2a.m. and it was simply
tranposing of letters.

The error windows have a lot of text - is there anyway I can send you the
jpeg of the screenshots so you can look at them? I don't see a place for an
attachment here.

There are image hosting sites, where you can put the image for free.

Once you've uploaded the picture, get the URL of the picture page, so
you can post that link in a new message.

I can find a hit on "iepsps.dll" here.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=98745&st=15&p=562405&#entry562405

c:\program files\common files\corel\pspthumbshellext\iepsps.dll

Notice the second to last foldername. PSP thumbnail shell extension.
It could be, that some Corel program added an extension for
aiding the thumbnail feature. And added it for some file format
like PSP, whatever that is ? (Paint Shop Pro format ?)

http://www.telegraphics.com.au/svn/pspformat/trunk/psp5spec.pdf

Just for fun, if you have one of those, you can upload
it to virustotal.com and have it scanned for viruses.

I don't seem to have an iepsps.dll on my computer here, so
I don't think it is a regular system file. And it likely
came with your copy of Paint Shop Pro (by Corel or Jasc).

Hmm, you are correct PSP is Paint Shop Pro and you know what? I did purchase
the latest version however, I installed that a couple of months ago but I
just recently started using it. I wonder if something activated after I
started using it. I will check out your links and if none of them help I'll
be on the horn with Corel 1st thing tomorrow! How long have you been doing
this? I looked at the report but geez, my eyes went buggy after awhile and I
never even saw the reference to Paint Shop Pro.
Thanks for taking the time, Paul! Now, is there a spell checkre that will
fix trasnposde lettres? OLO

Hah! This is a familiar pet peeve. It seems that most checkers are
configured to correct mistakes for people that can't spell. There should
be a second mode - for clumsy typists. I'm one of them, and it is quite
annoying. The more comprehensive checkers, like in Office, offer the
correct versions only at the end of their suggestion lists. And some of
the simpler ones, like in Mozilla, sometimes don't offer them at all.
Could it be that the majority of people don't know how to spell, but are
consistent in 'correctly' typing out their ignorance?

I just highlight questionably spelled words then with the cursor
centered on the highlighted word, right click and you get a list of
possible correct spellings. I get the impression few people are aware
of this feature.

I don't know how many people are aware. I /am/ aware, and my
complaint is that with my type of typos (transposed letters, or hit an
adjacent key instead of the correct one), the correct word is offered
only at the very end of the list, if at all.
Just to illustrate: I mistyped "jobs on the fringe" as "uobs on the
gringe". Note that this is a 'next key' mistype on a querty keyboard. In
Word, the first choice to correct 'uobs' was indeed 'jobs', while
Thunderbird did not offer a correct version at all. And for 'gringe',
the situation was reversed - Word did /not/ offer 'fringe', while
Thunderbird offered it as a second choice.
What I'm saying is that there should be a "clumsy typist" mode for
the spell-checkers, where the first choices should be the adjacent keys,
instead of assuming that the user can't spell. In this mode, offers to
correct 'gringe' into 'grange' or 'gringo' should go to the end of the
suggestion list.

Two different features in play here, Spellcheck, and AutoCorrect.

.
I just wanted to say a HUGE THANKS to Paul and Peter for all your help and patience. It looks like the problem is fixed! I went in to PSP and tweaked some of the default settings and I'm thinking that did it. I guess it did install something that wasn't "activated" (for lack of a better word) until I started using the program. The new version has a lot of bells and whistles and previews! Keep your fingers crossed because that was really annoying, and THANKS AGAIN!
