explorer closing when trying to view jpegs. HELP!

Hi,
hoping for some help here!
when I view the contents of a folder with mixed file
types and jpegs, frequently (say 4 in 5 times) explorer
will have an error and then close.
it's a real pain in the ass!
does anyone know of anything I can check or change?
and I've tried changing view types (icons, list etc) and
it doesn't seem to make a difference

I've seen this on one computer when jpegs and tiffs were associated with
Photoshop Elements. Resetting the default WinXP file associations fixed it -
in this case by uninstalling Elements and reinstalling it but not changing
the file associations.
