Explorer Address Bar Overwrites Typing

For several months now the address bar in Windows Explorer will not
let me finish typing a directory, URL, or file name in the text box.
It reverts and selects whatever is the current directory or takes a
few characters of what I am typing. The only way I can put anything
into the text box is to cut-and-paste it. The other account on this
computer does not have this problem.

Mark,

You're not alone. I'm in the same boat, and NO ONE has been able to figure
it out. I thought I was in good shape after I reghosted my machine (I keep
the profile on a separate drive) but alas, it returned after my latest
ghosting, so all I can do is narrow it down to a profile issue... but I'd
hate to have to make a new profile...

Did you have any luck with the DIFF on the registry hives?

Jeff

Thank you! :o)

Hi Kelly,

Good to see you back!

This is interesting.

The following is not true on my machine. Open Recycle Bin from Desktop,
type in an address, nothing interferes, click go and there it goes.
Whether
it be a url or path.

[[SYMPTOMS
If you open the Recycle Bin and try to type in the Address bar, the
address
reverts back to Recycle Bin, and this prevents you from opening or viewing
other folders from the Recycle Bin. For example, whatever you type in the
Address bar is rapidly and automatically changed to "recycle bin."
RESOLUTION
To view or open folders, use Microsoft Internet Explorer or Windows
Explorer
instead of the Recycle Bin.
STATUS
This behavior is by design. ]]

Hi Mark,

Line 157 does not address this issue. Nor does Auto Complete.

Hi Mark,

This has to do with the Security of Browsers:
http://www.cs.nmt.edu/~liebrock/papers/TRBrowserSecurity.pdf

Old but good info:
http://dev.remotenetworktechnology.com/ts/fixmsrdp.htm

And/or third party:

Opera users claim: Search field in address bar always overwrites the
exisiting page ....
PCWash: Securely deletes and overwrites any file you choose.

Privacy Guard: which overwrites the erased files up to 21 times with
special chosen patterns of data to ensure that it will never be possible to
recover it. It was designed to securely erase all your Internet History,
browsing traces, temporary files, cookies and all the other files that you
don't want to be found by anyone else!

If there is no solution then it has to be a bug right?

I don't know if its a bug -- but it's bleedin' annoying! :-\

As far as the recycle bin thing goes, mine behaves the same way the rest of
the folders do -- overwrites on the first or second keystroke...

Mark,

Did you ever resolve this?

I just got a brand new PC with XP Pro SP2 pre-loaded 4 days ago. I have the
same problem, but it wasn't there at the very beginning. It seems to have
shown up somewhere around the time that the cable technician installed
software on the machine for the cable modem. Whether it's related to the
cable software or not is uncertain, but considering how invasive the install
was, I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyway, one additional thing I've noticed about Windows Explorer is that the
Status Bar continually flickers. I suspect it might be related to the Address
Bar problem. Have you noticed it too? I wonder whether there is a service
running in the background that's causing it.

Not sure what the issue is, but note that you really ought NOT to let the
cable dude ever muck around with your computer. There is absolutely nothing
they need to install, if you have a network card and TCP/IP. There's no
authentication required as there might be in DSL, and all they're installing
is 'branded' software you likely don't need.

All you need to do is connect the computer to the cable modem, and you ought
to be good to go. Ipconfig /renew may be necessary if your computer doesn't
automatically get an IP address.

Of course, you will have your Windows firewall (or another firewall) active
before connecting *any* computer to the Internet, even for a scant
nanosecond, right?
