Explorer 6 Update KB942615

After instaling all the updates today, I found out that after cleaning my
cache, I found that trying to go on certain websites, even my MSN mail I
would get the standard message"Explore has encountered a problem.....". I did
a system restore thinking newly instaled software was the problem. Every
thing was fine until I reinstalled the updates.
Since only the update pertaining to explorer was KB942615, I uninstalled it,
and problem solved.
My question is...when will Microsoft have a new update to fix what KB942615
was suppoed to fix or a patch to fix KB942615................

I just installed all the updates on my wife's PC with the exact same
results.....
Since I now knew what to do I just uninstalled KB942615 in the add/remove
programs and problem solved so back to my original question...
When will Microsoft have a new update to fix what KB942615
was supposed to fix or a patch to fix KB942615................

Hope this is helpfull to someone else with this problem

I have the same problem after the updates today,thanks for sharing the
information,hope Microsoft do something about it.

Same here it seems to be urlmon.dll that is screwing up,IE shuts down so does
winamp and Yahoo messenger.

NNo wonder my Winamp was closing and Yahooe-mail page was closing,thanks

This afternoon I updated a relatives WIN XP SP2 machine with KB942615 and a
few other updates from windows update.
Had same problem--It broke IE6 and I could not find the KB942615 update in
"ADD/Remove" (YES- I had show updates checked). I had to do a system restore
to a check point from yesterday. All was well with IE after that restore.
Worked fine.
Now I am worried that 4 other relatives XP machines that I take care of will
do the same thing. The only thing I recall that I did different was to check
"do not install" IE7 on ALL the machines after they downloaded IE7 on their
own through automatic update.
The install for IE7 is partly started when you get a window that asks if you
want to install IE7 or not.
I am wondering if the problem comes from not fully installing IE7. I would
not believe MS would set up something like that. But----why ask if you want
IE7 AFTER
I could see the install package copying some files?
Seems odd to me. I wish I had one machine out of the 5 I take care of where
I did not have auto updates turned on. Then it would have no part of IE7 on
it and I could install KB942615 and see if IE6 got broken on that machine.
Any thoughts??

Don't let them install it unless they like seeing that little gray box pop up
and their program then closing,we here are just the few who are talking about
this right now,beleive me there are thousands more wondering what the hell is
wrong with their compter now..

1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by
an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes Spybot
Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any
third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: If you're running ZA Free firewall, you may need to uninstall it instead
of disabling it. You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else
online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your
anti-virus application has been re-enabled!

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows XP (KB942615)"] via Add/Remove
Programs, if installed (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right)
and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and Custom install any Critical
Updates offered. **DO NOT INSTALL IE7!**

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if
applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party
firewall.

I'm going to remove 942615 again, because after your step 3 when I started
IE6 I didn't experience the problem. Thanks for trying, though.

Bear and Lazarus:

Bear's fix did not work for me either.
I had windows firewall disabled AND my AVG disabled when I did my custom
install the FIRST time.
I always use "custom" option. All I selected were the 3 critical updates.
No IE7.
When I re-boot--error comes back
When I uninstall KB942615--all is well.
I wonder what gives?

My microsoft updates are set to manual for just such occurrenses, so I never
installed and uninstalled explorer 7 because friends had warned me about it.
I guess I will leave KB942615 on the back burner until microsoft comes up
with a fix...

Yes &
Yes & now that update stays on the back burner until microsoft writes a
patch for it or a new update....a couple of friends have reported the same
problem to me this morning and when they uninstaled the update the problem
disapeared!

Gawd, I like bangning my head against the wall.....I again reinstalled the

I'm going to remove 942615 again, because after your step 3 when I started
IE6 I didn't experience the problem. Thanks for trying, though.

1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided
by an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes
Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any
third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: If you're running ZA Free firewall, you may need to uninstall it
instead of disabling it. You're "working without a net" now: Don't to
ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4
below until your anti-virus application has been re-enabled!

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows XP (KB942615)"] via Add/Remove
Programs, if installed (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top
right)
and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and Custom install any
Critical

Also... PA Bear... do some troubleshooting next time... Don't do the
standard verbage.

we are working fine. I will post information as I get it.
