Explain working offline

I assumed working offline, temporarily closed the door to outside
communications. I relied on this assumption whenever I was away from my
computer at home. However, I have received IM's, emails during this
'offline' period. Could someone explain the process and what I can expect
from it?

How are you accessing working offline?

To work offline, pull the plug from your modem.

Apparently, your browser was offline, but that does not mean that you are
not connected to the Net...for other services such as IM.

I came here for answers, instead I get glib remarks suggesting UNPLUGGING.

Take the (ME) out of the equation, if you know....explain this 'work
offline' that can be selected on either IE6 or OE6 under MENU/ File. What are
the expected capabilities of this function. PLEASE, do not respond. IF I
want to be exposed to someone's tilted interaction with society, I will turn
on the Comedy channel for a bout with warped views.
If you think the answer to this is one sentence, it must include a link to
the manual which defines it in detail.
