explain files

Hi, I have noticed when I checked my files installed
that I am getting a lot of "Hot Fix" stuff appearing
lately.

Why is this? Are they part of windows XP updates? I am
pretty much a novice so keep your answers simple please.

Thanks, Canuck

You should not be tempted to "uninstall" any "Hotfixes" listed in the
Add or Remove Programs section. They are listed there in the event
your computer does not function properly after they are installed.
Uninstalling them will uninstall the actual patches which were downloaded
and installed from the Windows Update website.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm

Note: Doug's program only removes the uninstall files and Hotfix entries
in the Add/Remove Programs listing. It does not remove the
actual updates.

They are the record for installed Windows Updates. If you
delete the Hotfix, the patch is still installed but you can
no longer remove the patch if there is some problem with the
patch.

Best to just ignore them, they do no harm unless you have a
very old system with a very small hard drive.

Canuck.
The hotfix prefix denotes a windows update, each one has a
number, these numbers you will find at WINDOWS UPDATE, if
you want to look.

The simple answer is that "hotfix" and "update" are pretty much
synonyms.
