Recently bought good, second hand computer- was riddled with malware and
viruses-spoke with microsoft support and with their help, reformatted the
windows xp home edition-went well! So in the newness of everything,
downloaded from windows update windows xp service pak 2 - It took 7 hours,
and i had to go home from work and walked the folks thru with the
installation- got to work today and the computer was functioning, but the
visual of it all was screwed up big time- hard to read some of it and was
HUGE letters . So I surfed around computer mgmt looking to fix it and decided
to system restore. It is fine now but was wondering what could have
malfunctioned for me not to be able to install xp service pack 2? Was
definitely an experience!!!

The graphic drivers were either corrupted by the SP2 install or you needed
to check for the latest XP compatible drivers at the graphics card
manufacturer's website.

Yes Yes! The monitor was stuck in 'Default Monitor " mode and there were no
options of changing it. I did go to device area and tried to download updated
driver for the display monitor, but I did not fully feel secure in what i was
doing so i just system restored and windows keeps telling me that updates are
ready for downloading but til I know exactly what to do , I am ignoring the
service pack 2.
Hey- by the way- when you do what I did, is the download still on the hard
drive? I mean it really took 7 hours with the dial up- don't want to do that
again ya know....
Thanks Mike

If you did a System Restore, it's unlikely any updates that you downloaded
are still on the hard drive. That said, it's not the monitor drivers that
need updating, it's the drivers for your graphics card. Now, you may only
need to reinstall the drivers, your computer should have come with a disk
with the drivers for your card.

If not or if reinstalling doesn't resolve the issue, you need to update the
drivers from the graphics card manufacturer's website. Check your
documentation to see what manufacturer and model card you have or open
Control Panel, open System, go to the Hardware tab, click Device Manager,
click the plus sign next to display adapters, it should tell you there what
manufacturer and what model card you have. Once you have that information,
go to the graphics card manufacturer's website and find the latest XP
compatible drivers for your card, make note of any instructions they have
for installing the drivers and follow those instructions.
