Expanding columns automatically

I have a worksheet that has financial information in it. As the number
in some of the columns increase, I see pound signs. I know that thi
indicates that the column is too small and needs to be adjusted.

My question: Is there a way for Excel to automatically adjust th
columns as the number grows larger or do I have to do this manually o
select autofit from the column menu?

would it be acceptable to just set the format of the cell
to shrink to fit? Then it will automatically adjust the
size of the font to fit within the cell.
