Exiting Outlook hangs

Outlook 2000 running on XPP - laptop.
Synchronizing some folders on business network.

When closing Outlook connected to the office network at the end of day it
goes through synchronizing my off-line folders and then it seems to hang on
the small close-down dialog. The only way to get rid of it is to:
1 Open another Outlook session
2 Do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete to the Task Manager
3 Select the offending dialog
4 End Task
5 Close Task Manager
6 Close the open session of Outlook (which it does fine)

Very frustrating.
If I simply kill the first Outlook session (dialog) without already loading
another session, then the next time I load Outlook it takes many minutes to
open. Maybe network related?
Opening and closing offline is no problem, though if I kill the original
network session as above, it still takes ages to load offline.
Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

Has anyone accessed your mailbox with Outlook 2003? The reason that I ask
is that Outlook 2003 can write certain properties back to the mailbox that
gives Outlook 2000 a problem and it wont shutdown cleanly. If you think it
is a possibility, start Outlook 2000 with the /cleanfreebusy and
/cleanreminders command line switches. If the switches help, then see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;834005.

As for the slow reopening, it's because outlook is repairing the message
store after you force it closed.
