Exiting footnotes or endnotes

When trying to return to the original document when exiting footnotes or
endnotes, it completely changes the whole document. Has anyone encountered
this before and if so, what did you do to fix the problem?

What version of Word? What kind of "complete change"? Which View are
you viewing your notes in? Do you exit them by double-clicking on the
note number, or by clicking back into the text, or by closing the note
pane (if in Normal View)?

No, I have never encountered any sort of change when returning from
note to text.
