.exe trouble-executables will not run

I mistakenly created an association for .exe extensions
and now none of my .exe files work. Does someone have a
fix for this, how can I restore the settings
..

Thanks, I still need help. It did not change anything. I
don't want to reboot unless I know that will work.
 
From a command prompt;
assoc .exe
what does it return with?

ftype exefile
what does it return with?

which appears to be correct, but my .exe files will still
not operate
 
Yes, correct. You'll probably need to restart for effect.
