.exe is not a valid win32 application - HELP!

I

Icklebeaker

I have just bought a laptop (Sony), the operating system is Windows XP
Media Centre and has Norton Internet Security 2006 and Norton Ghost
preinstalled.

I set up the machine and everything was working fine e.g. Internet
downloads.

I have now run the live update install for Norton and cannot download
any .exe files; I get the following error message '.exe is not a valid
win32 application'

Could this be something to do with the Anti Virus? If so, any ideas how
I can rectify it. I'm a complete novice and know NOTHING about
operating systems, set-ups etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated
