when i try to run a exe file the command prompt window flashes on and off
, but the file will not open.

What is the virus/malware status of the machine? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this? Be
sure:

If the computer is really virus/malware-free, you can try MVP Doug
Knox's .exe repair utility:

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting

Start > All Programs > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

Type in name of executable then hit Enter. If it is not found, type the
"full path" to the executable then hit Enter.
