Suddenly the little castle pops up by the clock on start up. It has an
exclamation saying to check for updates. Checking updates says 'there are
none' and the stupid thing does not go away.
[I noticed it is set to 'inform when a Program is blocked' and I can't
remember it ever doing that.]
Is it part of Windows Update? which I have set to auto update.
For years this little castle never showed up. It is a brand new twist.

The castle, presumably, is Windows Defender. It will go away if you have
installed another anti-malware suite which turns off Windows Defender's
functionality, because that protection is included in the suite. If you
uninstall the other software, Windows Defender will be turned on again.

I'd recommend going to the security
portal--www.microsoft.com/security/portal

and, in the upper left corner, download the 32-bit definitions for Windows
Defender, and see if that takes care of the update issue--just run the
download.
