Exchange Server setups question?

Kayal

I have windows NT 4.0 network with only 1 PDC of windows
NT 4.0 with few win 2k machines. I also use internet
through NAT router. where all my workstations are assigned
dynamic IP address through NAT Router with the exception
of NT server which is isolated on the same subnet but have
static ip address with same IP scheme that NAT router use.
I know it is very unsecured. Once Break in Hardware router
and its firewall one can gain access to my PDC and all
workstaions.I don't know anyother way to secure my network.

I want to know if I can have exchange server 2000 in my
network for the following purpose:

1)Inter-office emails via Ms outlook.
2)Email to outside world through my email server using
outlook client
3)Outside world send emails to my exchange server and its
distribute emails to proper email boxes on the server for
users to get their emails.

What do I need to setup my server with?
Do I need Windows 2000 server OS or NT 4.0 server OS ?
Do I must have to have active directory installed and DNS?
Do I need to make my server member server on my NT Domain
controller? or what would be setup with 2000 server OS ?

I just don't want to touch active directory. but If it is
a must to have Exchange 2000 to be installed I have no
choice.

What do I do ? Please someone help me in this regard. can
someone suggest me some setup tips?

Thanks all
Kayal

That is rediculas. It is not "insecure".

No they won't. Your addresses are RFC Designated Private addresses that
are, by design, not compatible with the Internet. Nobody on the Internet can
even use them as "destinations".

Yes,...if you have a static Public IP# on the external side of the NAT box
that does not change.

Exchange2000 doesn't run on NT. If you want to keep NT, then you need to use
Exchange 5.5. However migrating from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 200 or 2003
in the future is very complex.
Do I must have to have active directory installed and DNS?
Yes

Do I need to make my server member server on my NT Domain
controller?

Yes....on a 2000 Active Directory Domain. An NT Domain can only use
Exchange 5.5.
I just don't want to touch active directory. but If it is a must to have

You have no choice, unless you want to run Exchange 5.5.

You need more than "tips". Exchange 2000 is extremely complex. It makes
changes to Active Directory that are *not* reversable. You should not touch
Exchange until you have studied it enough that you would not even have to
ask these questions. That is not a put-down, I am just saying that for your
own good, do not attempt this until you are confident about it.

Yes , I do have Static WAN IP address in my NAT router.

I have prepared another Box of windows server 2000.
This is going to be my Exchange server 2000 Machine.
Do I need to just register this machine in windows NT 4.0
Domain same way I register my windows 2000 professional
desktop machines?

Do I need to have this machine get Dynamic IP address from
my NAT router?

Do I need this machine has Static IP address 192.168.1.2,
subnet 255.255.255.0 with Gateway pointing to my NAT
router Internal IP address which is 192.168.1.3 , DNS
192.168.1.3?

OR

should this gateway point to my NT domain controller which
is 192.168.1.1?

maybe all above is wrong. I think I need to give this
machine STATIC IP keeping same IP schem as NAT router and
run DCPROMO on this MACHINE so that I can make this
machine CHILD DOMAIN for NT DOAMIN right?

I am confused here When I ran dcpromo the wizard ask
several questions and I just don't know what options to
follow as this shouldn't be the FIRST domain in my NETWORK.

Pleas help

I really wouldn't know where to begin with anything else. There seems to be
so many things you don't understand or are unsure about that I would never
recommend that you do this on your own. There is no way I can bring you up
on all those things well enough in an email that you could just run off and
do it yourself,..I think you better seek someone that can be there to help
you get through this.
