Situation developed where a user cannot receive a message
that has an attached OLE file. He was previously receiving
such OLE files. User was on Outlook XP SP 2 (upgraded to
sp 3 after the problem developed, but no luck). The
delivery option is to the pst, which is approx. 1.2 GB, so
it isn't a pst size issue. As a sanity check I created a
new pst and the messages still wouldn't deliver/move to
it. Drag and drop to the pst will not work.
The email is delivered to the Exchange-side Inbox and sits
there rather than being delivered. The attachment icon is
evident. When the message is opened (from Exchange Inbox
rather than pst Inbox) this error message appears: Could
not open one or more attachments. The mail then opens and
the OLE has already been deleted. Any other attachments
such as Office doc are still attached, can be opened, and
saved to the HDD. The message can be replied to but not
forwarded. Other email messages w/o OLE are delivered
correctly.
It gets strange. Other users (on the same email server,
domain, building, etc.) receive the OLE embedded message
just fine. The hardware is the same and the software
builds of the computers are from the same image, and have
the same service packs, hotfixes, etc. They're duplicates,
were deployed 6 months ago, and have been fine ever since.
Boxes are w2k sp3 w/ all post sp3 updates.
I'm able to receive OLE embedded emails. I configured the
user's Outlook client on my box and found the same probelm
w/ his profile.
It doesn't look to be a Outlook client issue--if it were
it would be isolated to the one box. The OLE is being
stripped at the Inbox on the server. Yet, the email admin
state that this user's account is no different from the
others, i.e. security settings don't forbid delivery of
OLE attachments.
I'm perplexed.
