"Exchange extensions" warning

Whenever I start Outlook 97 I get the warning:

Error in registry for extension "Exchange Extensions;?". The syntax or
format of the registry entry is incorrect. Check the registry settings and
compare the registry for this extension to other extensions in the registry.
The extension "Exchange Extensions" is not loaded. This version of Outlook
only supports Microsoft Exchange 4.0 extensions. Change the version number
in the registry, or install Microsoft Exchange again." Click OK.

Other than this warning Outlook seems to work OK. (If it makes any
difference, I don't use Outlook for email.)

I see that there is a suggested fix at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823633 but this is listed for Outlook 2003.
Would this also apply to Outlook 97? Whatever changes, I want to be sure
that they don't interfere with any other software that I use.

Before trying those steps, I would delete the file named extend.dat. Since
you don't mention what OS you are using, I can't tell you where to find this
file. I can only say that under NT/2000 that it would exist under each OS
user profile.

Other than that, between steps 3 and 4 of the link supplied, I would export
out the section to a .reg file before doing the delete. This way you don't
have to remember/jot down what was there before doing the delete and it is
easy to bring back if the need arises.
