We are looking to upgrade the domain currently to all Server 2003 DCs and
upgrading the mode to native 2003. We currently do not want to upgrade the
Exchange 2000 server since we have to find out how to keep IM capabilities
since our users rely on it. We've been looking all over the web and posting
in Microsoft newsgroups and have been getting conflicting information. We
have already ran the inetOrgPersonFix script to correct the schema issues
with Exchange 2000 and we have run ADPrep and DomainPrep for the 2003 domain.
Most of what we have read says this is enough and we can start creating 2003
Domain Controllers and move the domain to 2003 with no issues, leaving the
Exchange 2000 server in place and still working for our users. Another few
posts say that we have to run Exchange 2003 forest/domain prep before we
should do this. We will eventually be running Exchange 2003 but we have 5
other servers to get up and running first.
Do we/should we run the Exchange 2003 prep before going ahead with our
Domain upgrade or will we be fine leaving it how it is? The last thing I
need is to take down the domain or e-mail while doing this.
