I have 2 spread sheets open. When I close one, they both close. How can I keep one open when I close the other one?

How are you closing them?

Does Excel completely close at the same time?

Which version of Excel?

I close them with the "X" at the top right hand corner

One reason might be the way you are closing either file. If you are using the 'X' in the uppermost right corner you are request that Excel close ALL open .xls

If you have multiple instances of excel open, look directly below the 'X' to find a second one adjacent to the help window. This closes only the xls you are in.

The "X" in the top right hand corner closes Excel and, therefore, any open
workbooks.

Either use the "X" below the top right one or, better still, click on File >
Close.
