Excell and Word stall on virus request

I have just had to uninstall and reinstall a lot of microsoft updates and now
both Excell and Word stall while virus request is active. Cannot shut either
down. The only way to get out is to do Ctrl/Alt/Delete and get into task
manager and close them down

Not only were the virus requests in Excel and Word U/S, Norton internet Security and Norton System works were also U/S, so I did a complete rebuild.
