Can someone tell me how to split a cell in order to type a
word in the upper left hand corner of the cell and another
word in the lower right hand corner of the same cell,
separated by a line from the lower left corner to the
upper right corner.

XL has no way to "split a cell".

A workaround:

1) Put a border in the cell from lower left to upper right.
2) Format the vertical alignment of the cell to "center"
3) Enter the text. Adjust spaces between the "split" words as necessary.
