That leads to a link for excel-viewer for win2000 and up, no win98SE.
These two will open excelfiles, but are a bit large just for this purpose.

There is a Microsoft XLViewer.exe around for Excel 97.

I understand that this file is no longer to be found on
Microsoft's site. But hey, we have Google, haven't we?

download an Excel Spreadsheet Viewer from several Web Sites such as
Microsoft

Has anyone monitored the installs on these (using Total Uninstall, etc.)?
I'm just curious how many reg entries and system files they add.
