Excel turns my number into a formula

I'm trying to type a number with error bars, specifically -0.1 +/- 0.12.
Excel, idiot program that it is, thinks this is a formula and keeps trying to
correct it. I tell it I don't want it corrected, but then I cannot get out
of the cell without pasting in another cell value (ie, D7 and the like).
Obviously, this screws up the number I'm trying to display. How do I get
this stupid program to stop its bullshit and just let me type what I need to
type? Thanks for any help.
 
If you are trying to display this as text rather than an equation simply
type an apostrophe at the beginning of your string.
