Excel Terminology

I am trying to find help on performing a task in excel but don't know
the name of the task or good key words so that I can find assistance on
this.

I have seen in an excel spreadsheet where there is a plus or minus for
expanding sub sections of a spreadsheet.

I would like to do this so that I can compress my data to see only key
headings or first level subheadings instead of the teens of items
listed under each section.

I hope this makes sense... Thanks for your input.

You're talking about Group and Outline under the Data Menu

You can get these by applying data|group and outline (like Cutter wrote), but
you can also get them by applying data|subtotals.

And data|subtotals gives you subtotals between each group.
