Excel Template Saves as a Template?

D

Don Green

I use Windows 7.
I've created a template in Excel 2007. I saved it as template.xltxm.

When I use the file, then click Save, I expect a new SAVE box to open.
Instead, it just saves itself as a template. I have "Save as Excel
Workbook" checked in the Options.

I can't seem to figure out why it doesn't save as a workbook.
I'm grateful for any helpful ideas.

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with newer versions of Excel but you used
to have to put templates in the templates folder. Then, when
using File/New it shows available templates.

Next time you try to create a new workbook using that template, make sure you're
not editing the template itself. You should be able to see the workbook name in
the title bar.

It should look something like: MyTemplate1
(no extension and with a trailing number)

If you see: MyTemplate.xltm
then you're not creating the workbook correctly.

It could be something you're doing wrong -- or it could be a setting in windows
not to use New as the default action for .xlt* files.

If this is correct, you'll have to give more info on how you're creating the
template (doubleclicking on the .xlt* file in windows explorer or something else).

OK.
I thought it was the same process as what happens in MS Word 2007.

I can open any document.
Save it as template, (on the Desktop or anywhere esle).
Open the template.
When I click 'Save', it automatically Saves as new document.

I wonder why Excel dpoesn't make it that easy.

You didn't share what you see in the titlebar when you open the template in excel.

You didn't share how you opened the template.

It could still be a windows setting.
