I m using office xp prof. and in excel when I open the file from my desktop
it only opens excel and does not open the file. I deleted the shortcut and
created again but did not work. I started excel in safe mode (excel.com /s)
still the same result. I run the setup office application and did detect
repair / restore my shortcuts still the same.

If I have to open any excel file I have to open excel first and from there I
have to click the file-open button. This way it is working. This is making me
very crazy as I have to open many files from different locations. Please help
to solve this problem.

This solution usually works

1) Run a window explorer (not internet). right click start and select
Explorer
2) Go to tools - Folder Options
3) Select File Types Tab
4) Go to XLS file type and select with mouse
5) Press Advance and select Set Default
6) Press OK

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)
(xl2003 menus)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets some of the windows registry to
excel's factory defaults.

As I mentioned earlier, I have run excel /s from the start run. It does the
same what you have mentioned. This also did not work out. Thanks.

are file formats (e.g. Excel 2003) the same as those of the Excel
version (e.g. 2007) you're using?
2007 will have trouble opening 2003 (.xls) files

I didn't suggest starting in safe mode.
