Excel opens and immediatly closes.

I am running Excel 2000 under XP. When I open it it
closes back down straight away. There are no error
messages. I run my desktop in 1600 * 1200 on a 20" TFT
with fonts set to 150%. If this is the problem, and it
seems to be is there any way to get Excel to run under
these conditions.

I am having same problem using 98 SE, also affects Outlook.
Started occurring after downloading Critical Updates .
