benallred99

I have imported a list of birthdates that are formatted as a number suc
as:

19730612 which represents June 12, 1973

Is there anyway to have Excel recognize this as a date in the for
yyyymmdd and then convert it to a different format such as mm/dd/yyyy?

Thanks,

Hi

Select the range and then use Data / Text to Columns. This gives you the
option of telling Excel it is a date and also the order of the day, month
and year within it.

You can use the text to columns feature to accomplish this.
1) select/highlight the column to convert by clicking on the column indicator (A or C1)
2) On the toolbar, select Data, then Text to Columns
3) In the popup window, if your text is all together with no spaces, select delimited then next
4) nothing to select on the next screen, just click next
5) in upper right box, select date and in the pull down menu select YMD
6) click finish

The date is now properly formatted for excel as a date and you can highlight the column and click on the toolbar format, cells, choose date and the format you prefer.

I hope this is clear enough and helps out.

You could download the third party tool: AddinTools Assist from
http://www.addintools.com. It includes several functions. One of these
functions is convert data of selected cells to text/number/date-time type.
It can convert data of all formats to text type.
It can recognize these formats as following and convert to date-time type:
99.1.2, 2003.1.2, 2003.1.2 11:12:13:14PM;
99-1-2, 2003-1-2, 2003-1-2 11:12:13.14PM;
990101, 20030102, 20030102 11:12:13:14PM;
locale format on your computer, and so on …
