Excel Icons lost

When I open My documents, I cannot see the normal Excel logo on the Excel
files. After I click on the file I get a pop up that states Windows cannot
open this file. I get a choice between letting the Internet find an
application or to pick one from a list. When I click pick one from the list
it takes me to Excel as an option, after clicking on that option the file
opens.

What happened to the Excel icons and why am I having to go through these
other steps?

Dear, try to open those excel documents from within the excel program
itself then recheck the result . hope it works.

I don't know what happened, but the first thing I'd try is to reregister excel.

Close excel
windows start button|Run
excel /unregserver
(and hit enter)
then
excel /regserver
(and hit enter)

Sherry, thank you for writing. Yes, that works but it seems to be a
band-aide for my issue.

Again, thank you for yoru suggestion.

Dave, thankk you but this did not work either. Yes, I had a space between
excel and /

Another suggestion? I have had this laptop for 22 months and never had this
issue.

FYI...I just noticed this is an issue with Word too. I have one Excel file
showing the proper icon.

Reregistering excel is a way of putting the settings in the windows registry
back to factory defaults.

Did you do both the /unregserver and /regserver commands?

If you didn't, make sure you do.

If you did, then I'd do it again (both commands).

If that doesn't work, I'd get my CD/DVD with MSOffice on it and reinstall excel
(or all of MSOffice if I was having trouble).
