excel hangs up when try to open

When I try to open any document by clicking open icon or usinf file>open,
either in My Documents or shared drive, Excel hangs up. I have tried
rebooting Excel, tried detect and repair, other online help. No luck so far.

I can open Excel files from e-mail attachments, though.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

Excell works fine when opening excel files using Windows Explorer. My problem
is when I open Excel or word and click on the open icon and then try to open
a folder. when I click on a folder to open Excel just hangs. The same thing
happens with Word.
