excel gives 3*2=7 why? help!

I am making a simple list of items and have added vat to.I have made a return
column and attempted to get excel to times the units by the cost,ie if i am
returning 3 items @ 2p it is giving the answer 7. I is giving a value of 47
for three items of 16 help!

Have a look at the decimals and cell formats! The actual value of a cell can
be distorted (rounded) by cell formatting! When selecting a cell the formula
bar shows you the exact value that can be different from the value displayed
in the cell!
