Excel formulae not working

I use Windows 98 with Office 2000 Standard. In Excel I
want to show Surname (Smith), Christian name(Tom), Golf
Handicap(15) and Telephone(383536) in Line 4 of Columns A,
B, C and D and replicate them in columns H, I, J and K by
using the simple formulae =+A4, =+B4, =+C4 and =+D4. I
have formatted each column to text or number as
appropriate.

I am finding a random error of the formulae not "holding".
For example H4 shows "Smith" but I4 shows "=+B4", J4
shows "15" but K4 shows "=+D4". If I test the formula
=+D4 in column S, for example, I get 383536 - the correct
result. I didn't ever get this problem in my old version
of Works. Can anyone suggest an answer ?

Cells containing formulas should not be formatted as Text even if the
formula result is text.

Reformat the offending cells to a general or numeric format. You will
probably need to <F2> <Enter> each cell to display the formula result
correctly.
