Hi,

I am trying to create an excel formula to calculate economy rate of a bowler.
Economy rate is Runs conceded / no. of overs bowled ..

Problem comes when a bowler bowls overs in decimals, so like 6 balls make up an over. So if a bowler has bowled 3.5 overs and conceded 39 runs, his economy should be 10.17 ... But if you simply divide runs by 3.5 you wont get that answer. So, I am very confused and tried a lot of formulas but still not getting it.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Welcome to the forum @K3tone :)

I don't know much about cricket, so I'm not sure how you arrived at the 10.17 figure - could you clarify?

Actually I think I may know what has happened - working backwards, 39 divided by 10.17 gives 3.83 - or in other words, 3 5/6ths. So I think 3.5 actually represents 3 overs and 5 balls, not three-and-a-half overs. Does that help?

That is correct Becky.

The OP is using 3.5 as 3 1/2. That would be equivalent of 3 balls.

So 39 divided 3overs and 3balls is 11.14

if there were 3 overs and 5 balls that would be 3.83333 in decimal(base10)

39/3.833333 is 10.17.

Each ball is 1/6th of an over and in decimal that is 0.16667.

Multiply 0.16667 by the number of balls bowled to get the decimal equivalent and add to the completed number of overs.
