Excel file inside Word file

I've added an Excel file as an unlinked object inside a word file yesterday.
I opened the Word file today and tried to open the Excel inside it and the
file seems to be corrupted. It does not open anymore and the file icon is
blank. Has the Excel object corrupted for good or can it be saved?

Version of Word? Do you get any kind of message when you double-click?

If you hold down CTRL when starting Word, then try, do you get a different
result?

It's Word and Excel 2003. The Excel file icon in the Word file does not open
the saved Excel-file but the original one and we cannot find a copy of saved
file from c:\temp.
