Excel file becomes read-only when copied from one server to another

Hi, I have to transfer some files from the old server to the new server.
So I copied some files over to the new server for testing. However, I've
noticed that the excel files turn into read-only files. They can neither
be edited, saved and no changes can be done at all.

I checked the attributes of the files and they have no read-only
checked in their properties. However, the folder in which they reside
has the read-only checked but is grayed out. I tried to uncheck it. But
later go back to properties to see and it's the same thing - read-only
checked and grayed out.

I am copying the files from windows Small business server 2000 to
windows server 2003 std. Is there a policy in server 2003 causing the
read-only to be turn on for excel files?

If that box is greyed out then it is inheriting it's properties from the
parent folder. Check the properties for your folder and see if you are able
to turn off inheritance. It may be defined by the sysop.

I am suppose to look after the server but I'm new to server 2003. There
are lots of policy in the server. I would appreciate if you could tell
me the exact location. Thanks.

Hmmm 2003 eh? Not sure if there is a difference but in 2000 this is the
procedure:

right click the folder
select security (*see if your name is shown here or you won't be able to
make changes and you will have to find somone on that list that has change
permissions authority to add you)
select advanced
remove the checkbox from the line that says "Inherit permissions from
parent..."
choose copy
you should be able to remove that check box now.
