excel sometimes gives the error message that it has encountered an error and
needs to close. this happens in a file i share with one other person. i
think it has a problem when i add a tab, but i'm not able to pinpoint the
cause of the error. any ideas what events can cause excel to "experience
an error..."?

Conflicting files in the Temp directory, too many files in Temp internet files
directory, not enough space on drive, saving to network that may be burping

Saving file, coloring a cell, bolding a cell, entering data in a cell, moving
between sheets, moving between cells, opening a file, printing a file, setting a
print area, looking crosseyed too long at the monitor and file, running a macro,
writing a macro, recording a macro, starting Excel, Ending Excel, minimizinv
Excel, maximizing Excel

thanks. how about a more specific question in search of a useful response:

if i add a tab to a shared excel file, will that cause that shared file to
become corrupted? and why

i thought the purpose of a shared file was to have several people working in
the same file concurrently, but as lady layla nicely points out, doing
anything in a shared file will cause it to crash.

has anyone experienced problems with shared excel files and how did you
resolve the problem?

I have been experiencing the same problem. I have searched all over the internet and not found any helpful information about Sharing of Excel files. It is causing me great grief and I need to get some sort of direction as do you.

Anyone with this kind of knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
