Excel document protection

I need to set up an Excel document that will serve as a template, where
others can make changes and "Save As" another file name, but not change the
original document. I'm using Excel 2003. Any suggestions on how to do that?

template, then when you open the file it will open a copy of the file, will

Hi Paul,

Maybe I didn't do it correctly. I saved the document as a template, but
when I opened it the template opened (rather than a copy), so when I made
changes and saved it the template changed as well. Is there something else I
need to do so the template doesn't allow change? I've never used passwords
or protected files before, but maybe there's a way to password protect the
template, but allow copies of the template to be made that does allow changes?

Don't open the template.

You can do File|New.

You should be able to double click on the .xlt in windows explorer and get a new
workbook based on that template.

Another option is to use windows explorer to mark the .xls as readonly.

(But anyone can change that attribute, too.)

If you're really worried, maybe putting the workbook on a shared drive that only
you have write access would be best. You'll have to contact your IT folks to
set it up (a guess).
