Excel data selection will not turn off

Excel gets "stuck" in a "selection" mode where you cannot stop Excel from
highlighting data ranges. All other menus are unresponsive. I do not know
what to call this, and I don't know how it is turned on, though my primary
goal at the moment is to turn it off.

Things that didn't work:
EXC
Ctrl+ESC
Ctrl+Break
Scroll lock
F8

Do you have a wheel on your mouse? Try pressing the wheel until it clicks
