Excel data not showing when opening file from explorer

I try open an XL file from the windows explorer and the
XL program opens, but there is nothing shown. If I open
XL and then from within XL look for the file everything
works.
I have tried reassigning the file type to XL, rebooting,
and many other things but nothing seems to work. BTW: the
files are in a mapped drive, but again opening from
within XL works. Any ideas?

Try Tools-Options-General and uncheck Ignore Other Applications. I don't
know if it will work, but it's worth a shot.

And if Dick's suggestion doesn't work, maybe this will:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

I've never used /unregserver before. Is it better to do that before you use
/regserver? I thought /regserver did the job, but maybe I've just been
lucky.

I used to suggest just the /regserver bit, until someone posted back that it
didn't fix the problem.

But when that person did the /unregserver, then /regserver, it worked.

I figure it can't hurt and it may help.

Resetting everything in two little steps doesn't seem too bad to me.

Guys,

Dick's suggestion made the trick. So I did not try Dave's.

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate you both had the time
and will to help.

Have a great day.
