Excel data entry and toolbar not functioning

When using excel, the program will not accept data and
most toolbar functions are grayed out. It appears to be
in a read only mode. Any thoughts on correcting this.

Sounds like "reduced functionality mode" which happens when you have not
activated Office or the trial period has expired on your trial version of
Office.
