EXCEL COUNTIF FORMULA

I am trying to count all of my boxes in column I & J that are merged if they have a insurance number located in them. I don't want it to count them if there is a "n" located in the box though. Before when I had just "y" and "n" I knew the basic formula of =COUNTIF(I8:J500,"y")

I hope that makes sense.

Any suggestions?
