Excel 97 won't work on new computer

I just got new Compaq computer with windows XP home and installed excel
97 on it. I had some files on floppies I had saved. When I try to open
these files I get a Excel 2003 setup window wanting a product key. My 97
key is 20 numbers and this is wanting 25 numbers.
I can open the 97 I installed and access my files from the file open
menu. When I try to save it the floppy starts working. If I take the
floppy out the drive keeps chattering trying to find a floppy When I try
to save as the acel 2003 setup window comes open.

I haven't attempted to install excel 2003, don't even have a disk for it.

Try uninstalling 2003 from the control panel. If that doesn't work, you may
need to completely remove all versions, and then install 97. References:

I don't have 2003, or at least I don't think so. I do have some
referance to it but I don't know how to use it if it is there. This is a
brand new computer so unless it came on it no one has put it on.

Did you check in the control panel for the trial version? If it's there,
uninstall it.

I looked in control panel and found that version 2003, uninstalled it
and my 97 works now.
