Excel-97 on Windows-XP

Ineed Help

Have copied Excel files from NT station to XP laptop.
Disconnected XP laptop from network to attempt to work
while traveling. Each time there is an attempt to open
any Excel file copied from NT, get a popup window warning
that the file is already open. Any work that is done can
not be saved, even to another name.

Has this been seen else where, and what is the fix.
