Excel 2007: very slow to load spreadsheet

I am runnin Excel from Office 2007. I have an existing workbook. When I
double-click on the shortcut to start Excel and load that workbook, Excel
starts right up, but the workbook takes several minutes before it appears.

I may be mistaken, but it seems that if I click the Windows
maximimize/restore button, I can force Excel to display the sheet.

Anybody else notice this strange behavior?

Thanks,
Jim

Does it have the same problem if you navigate to where the document actually
is instead of clicking the shortcut?

Lauren,

Thank you for your quick reply to my posting. I'm sorry that it has taken me
so long to respond.

The answer is NO. If I first start Excel, and then open the file from the
most recently used list, or actually browse to the file and open it from
there, it opens right up. However, if I double-click on a shortcut for the
file, Excel starts, and then spreadsheet appears after an exteneded time,
maybe a minute or so.

What do you think is going on??

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond back.. I didn't notice that you'd
replied..

It's taking a long time because of the shortcut. I really can't remember how
shortcuts works, but if I recall correctly, opening a shortcut opens the
shortcut, reads the file location, navigates to the location, and opens the
file, instead of just opening the file. There's no "fix" as far as I know.
You can either just sit tight while you wait for your shortcut to open your
document, or you can navigate to where the document lives and open it from
there.

Upon further reflection... have you tried deleting the shortcut and making a
new one? It really shouldn't be taking a minute to open it.... try that and
see if it speeds up the process a little bit. That's just a shot in the dark
on my part- it might do nothing.

I have a lot of documents that I go through by navigating through My
Computer... some of them require wading through about twenty locations. I do
that because I hate cluttered desktops (I only have shortcuts to My Computer,
the Recycle Bin (because I can't figure out how to make THAT go away),
Firefox, Excel, Word, and Outlook on there), and it looks impressive to the
boss when he's looking over your shoulder after asking you to show him
something.

Anyway. Sorry I couldn't help you more. If you're still having problems,
feel free to email me at dramajuana AT gmail DOT com.

I am having the same problem; an existing worksheet will not open
immediately, will take 45-60 seconds to open by itself. If I "force" it to
open by using the "magic button" the file will open immediately at that time,
then about 45 seconds later I receive an error message stating that the file
is already open, to close one of them or I will lose data. By selecting excel
options & selecting "open all files in folder" I can get my most used file to
open immediately if I make another folder & place the file in it, then point
to folder & my most used excel file will open immediately as before 2007, but
other files still have to go through the selection process to open. I have
seen this same problem posted quite a few times in this forum, & also in
different ways, trying to explain problem, & though I notice a Microsoft rep
will answer other questions, I have not seen an answer to this one.

I think I found a workaround to avoid this problem. I described it in
full detail on http://martin.von-gagern.net/howtos/excel2007load but it
boils down to
1. add "%1" to the open command line, to pass the file's path there
2. disable DDE open command when Excel has to be started by command line
The latter is achieved by entering [rem something], a remark, into the
third of the four DDE lines in the file action dialog.

Hope this helps you as well,
Martin

P.S.: Maybe someone with an English Windows would be so kind as to check
the labels in the page mentioned above, as I had to guess from the
German Windows translation.
