Excel 2007 crash

I have the following problem with Excel 2007:
When saving files in previous version (2003), quite often Excel
crashes or it fails to open these 2003 version files (saved by itself)
and also crashes.

Some opinions are that it might be due to new-old features conflict.
Not at all. I have saved just emty book in 2003 format, no single
modification to it, saved, closed, tried to open- crrash!

Does anyone came through it and have a solution?

I still have about 90% of my Excel documents in the 97-2003
format. The only time Excel crashed was when trying to save a
docuemnt that started life as a Lotus 1-2-3 .wk1 file that was
merged with a .FMT file, converted by Excel 97 to .xls and
upgraded and made over 8MB over the years.

We decided to start over. It was a great excuse to clean it up.

Oddly enough. 2007 could make it a .xlsx file, but going back to
2003 would either crash or take 5-10 minutes to save.
