Excel 2003 opens EXTREMELY SLOW

I recently received a new company laptop, with W2K Pro and Office 2003.
Word opens just fine, as do the other products; however, Excel is extremely
slow in opening. I did not have this problem when our configuration was W2K
Pro and Office XP (or 2002).

What is causing this problem? Is there a setting I need to
adjust...couldn't find anything...or do I need to change something in the
registry to enable a quicker file open?

I am also using Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition....and am seriously
thinking about switching to Trend PC-cillen instead.

Cleaning the windows temp folder sometimes works wonders.

Hi there. Thanks for the links, tried some of the info suggested on those
sites to no avail.

I did find a solution, however, and now my Excel files open and display
without the extremely slow action as well as actions that timed out - not
responding (via Task Manager).

I started to answer your post by saying the problem didn't affect the other
MS products in this suite, and it didn't with regard to opening and
navigating around in the files (PP and Word), BUT, it hung as soon as I
clicked on Page Setup and Print Preview.

At that point, I remembered a problem my husband experienced with a
development tool and lack of defined default printer using W2K and XP....

Well, I had a printer defined on our network, but somehow, it was not
responding correctly...tested by trying to print a Word doc. Once I deleted
it and added it again, tested the printing, as well as test printed the same
Word doc, I then tested Excel and it works as expected, no hangs upon
opening or saving...or accessing the Print Preview or other options within
the program.

I was about ready to dump this version and reinstall Office XP....since that
worked just fine.

Maybe this printer troubleshooting solution should be noted in some of the
Excel 2003 troubleshooting guide. Sure saves from renaming the normal.dot
and creating a new one as was suggested in another troubleshooting problem
with regard to printing.

The problem with this version, not sure if with the previous version, is the
association MS makes with

It will be noted on my slowresp.htm page,
as no default printer or incorrectly defined network printer.

Did not see a MS KB article to match such a problem for Excel 2003.
Tried for any Excel - got a couple of close matches

Thanks for the update (and thanks to David McRitchie for updating his site).

I've seen problems with print preview (and no printer)--but never a problem with
slow opening.

(And I'm kind'a chicken to test it <bg>.)

This is somewhat late, but I know that running macros sometimes slows Excel down, due to a library that ends up building itself in the documents folder for a specific user. Everytime I ran the macro it kept getting larger and Excel checked the library before it ran the macro, or smth. to that effect.

Anyway, cleaning the that directory in the documents folder cleared it right up.
